Description

Interview with Imrana Soofi:
In Hope Cemetery, dedicated in 1852, a tall monument dated 1918 and engraved with the words, "Moslem Brotherhood Association of Worcester, Mass," stands at the center of a small section of Muslim graves. The gravestones carry the star and crescent symbol of Islam as well as Arabic sayings from the Quran. The names of the dead reflect their many different ethnic backgrounds. I am a Muslim resident of Worcester and the founder of Muslim Community Link (MCL), a nonprofit organization in Worcester whose mission "is to foster positive interactions and advance community integration by providing quality educational, wellness and referral services for all members, inclusive of the most marginalized within the Muslim Community." The existence of these Muslim graves connects current Muslim residents with whose who came before us and also chose to make Worcester their home.
