Description

Interview with Ellen S. Dunlap:
This key opens the tomb of the Thomas family in Rural Cemetery.  Revolutionary War patriot Isaiah Thomas, founder of the American Antiquarian Society, died in 1831 at age 82. He was laid to rest in Mechanic-Street Burying Ground but was relocated to Rural in June 1878. At the reinterment, AAS President Stephen Salisbury stated, “The founder and his successors do not belong to the old class of miserly antiquaries who buried their treasures with themselves and cultivated rust. The aim of this Society is to restore to newness of life the relics of the past and apply them to the uses of today.” From that day, the key has always been watched over by the president of AAS.
